About this painting series

Reading Harold Speed’s book, Oil Painting Techniques, and Materials, we came across a brief description of Vermeer’s 1666 painting The Art of Painting that made us take a new look at it. In the book, the painting is referred to as an example of how during the Dutch Golden Age painters did away with church art and royal art and focused on domestic and personal subjects that were of interest to their eyes. In that sense, they cut themselves off from the rest of the art world, producing the most exciting and genuinely contemporary body of work.

We love that Vermeer, for this painting, just set up the studio in his house and included himself as a subject. Vermeer takes the concept of a painting inside of a painting to the next level: a painting inside of a painting, BOTH painted by the same artist, with one in actual progress, as if the artist time-traveled between past, present, and future.

For this series, we will have someone take a picture of us painting taken from a point of view similar to Vermeer’s painting. No face showing, just our backs and a section of the painting surface. Whatever we want to feature on that painting inside of the painting is up to us.

Props: a smartphone featuring a snapshot of us facing a painting.

Painting surface: any size, any kind.

Painting webinar medium: oil over cotton paper.
