Painting Series: TABLE REMNANTS
About this painting series
On a fascinating digital conversation featured in a post on twocoatsofpaint.com, Philadelphia artists Aubrey Levinthal and Alexis Granwell talk about their personal experiences during the current lockdown. Among the juicy and inspiring musings, the work of contemporary photographer Laura Letinsky comes up.
Letinsky's still life work alludes to human presence without including any actual figures. Her still lifes feature the aftermath of an event by presenting its remnants. The arrangements of objects seem unpremeditated, reconstructing a story out of the ruins of a past experience. At the same time, there is a sense of exactness and intention on the final scenes, a purpose to create fiction through formal esthetic norms. Isn’t that what we do when we paint?
Painting premise: still life painted from life.
Props: a table with a spread of objects showing the moment after something; after eating, after sketching, after painting, etc.
Painting surface: any size, any kind.
Painting webinar medium: oil over cotton paper.
